This weekend I participated in a river clean-up event organized by Clean Up Give Back, hosted by The Des Plaines Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America, revealing the far-reaching consequences of littering, and reminding me that our disregard for nature comes at a high cost.
The harmful effects of littering emphasized the importance of the Izaak Walton League's ongoing mission to protect our soil, air, water, and wildlife.
Impact on Wildlife: Littering is a threat to wildlife, causing immeasurable suffering and loss of life. Discarded plastic bags, bottles, and fishing lines, leave evidence of how animals get entangled, injured, and choked by the very waste thoughtlessly tossed away, with creatures mistaking debris for food or becoming ensnared in discarded materials. Our carelessness can unravel delicate ecosystems that endanger countless species.
