On February 9th, The Izaak Walton League was honored to host Mongolian Shaaman from Mongolia, Sweden, and the USA, alongside local Mongolian communities for a special celebration of Tsagaan Sar, the Mongolian Lunar New Year. This gathering brought together cultural leaders, conservationists, and community members to celebrate renewal, nature, and the deep wisdom of Mongolia’s traditions.

Tsagaan Sar, celebrated since the 13th century, is a time to honor ancestors, strengthen communal bonds, and express gratitude for the land that sustains us. Participants experienced the profound connection between Mongolian cultural heritage and environmental stewardship through shared meals, including meat-filled dumplings, traditional sweets, storytelling, and traditional rituals. The event highlighted how indigenous knowledge, passed down through generations, offers invaluable insights into sustainable living and conservation. Tsagaan Sar is not just a holiday, it’s a profound journey into the heart of Mongolian culture.
By embracing these traditions and fostering cross-cultural dialogue, we reinforce the essential link between cultural heritage and the future of our planet.
A heartfelt thank you to our Mongolian guests, Dan Creely, Jr., Firekeeper, Professor Emeritus, Northeastern Illinois University, and all who participated in this meaningful exchange.
Thank you! Miigwech! ᠪᠠᠶᠠᠷᠯᠠᠯᠠ!
