Community, Conservation, and Action with IWLA
April was a month of inspiration and action at the Izaak Walton League’s Des Plaines Chapter, as we proudly celebrated Earth Month with incredible events that reinforced our commitment to conservation and community engagement.
Forest Regeneration, Social Night, Paint n Sip, Birding & the Young Marines
Led by our Land Steward KT Petersen of Go Green Des Plaines, the month began with our Forest Regeneration Project on April 12, where volunteers continue working together to restore local woodlands.
On April 17, IKE's gathered for a fun social night with environmental board games and a few sips!
On April 18, participants enjoyed "Paint & Sip: Native Blooms & Brushes," an evening blending creativity with environmental appreciation for native plants, led by Eco Artist and Earth Activist Kathleen Brigidina.
The Spring Migration Bird Walk on April 22 offered nature enthusiasts a chance to observe migratory birds and learn about their habitats. Members and nature lovers gathered to experience the wonder of birds returning to our local habitats. Guided by expert naturalist, Alan Anderson from the Chicago BIrd Alliance, participants learned about the importance of protecting migratory paths, native plants, and healthy ecosystems, a perfect reflection of IWLA's commitment to conserving America’s natural resources for future generations. Every sighting, from warblers to hawks, reminded us why advocacy for clean air, water, and wildlife is so vital.
Culminating the month, the IWLA Illinois Division Annual Meeting on April 26 brought together IKE members statewide to discuss conservation strategies and organizational goals. This gathering of passionate advocates wasn't just a meeting, it was a rallying point for education, collaboration, and strategy on the biggest environmental challenges facing our communities today. Together, we discussed important initiatives like habitat restoration, clean water policies, youth engagement, and grassroots advocacy, all core elements of the Izaak Walton League’s nearly 100-year mission to defend outdoor America.
A heartfelt thank you to the Des Plaines Officers, Board, and Volunteers whose efforts made our regional conference a tremendous success. We were especially honored by the presentation of the Color Guard by the Young Marines and their leadership team, a moving tribute that added a powerful sense of unity and respect to our gathering, reflecting the strength of community working together in support of one another. Special appreciation goes to new members Amy and Jean for sharing their talents in art and cuisine, and to KT for the inspiring walk-about that highlighted our Forest Regeneration Project.
These events exemplify the IKE's mission to conserve, restore, and promote the sustainable use of natural resources, fostering a community dedicated to environmental stewardship!

In closing, Earth Month gave us a powerful reminder: positive change happens when communities come together with purpose.
The Des Plaines Chapter is proud to be part of that movement — but we need you to keep it growing. As conservationist Wendell Berry once said, “The Earth is what we all have in common.”
