Moonlit Marvels: Celebrating Moths

Writer: Cynthia NielsenCynthia Nielsen

Oakton College students and faculty, led by Naturalist Amanda Krause, gathered at the Izaak Walton League last Friday night to celebrate moths with fun activities, educational displays, and moth habitat exploration.

Did you know Illinois is home to over 1,850 species of moths—ten times more than butterflies? These moths, which are crucial pollinators, are as important as bees, bats, birds, and beetles in maintaining our ecosystem.

New moth species emerge every two weeks, making midsummer the peak time for moth diversity and abundance. Though some moths are only seen at specific times of the year, others appear multiple times, showing the ever-changing beauty of our nocturnal friends.

Under the cover of darkness, a world of beauty flutters among the trees. So next time the full moon lights up the night, don't miss the silent show!
